Cozy con Tooti, or A Car Cozy

Posted in Uncategorized at 7:45 pm by Administrator

Finally, after two years of off and on crocheting, my niece, Lauren, and I have assembled our life-sized car cozy. Starting it seemed like a good idea at the time. And now that the main part is assembled, it seems like a good idea again.

We begin

We started with the idea to cover a car that would be the size of a Sentra, but ended up with a Lexus. A lot longer car, but elegant at any rate.

Almost done, just two more pieces for the body

Today I began adding finishing touches, and will continue to work for the rest of the month while the installation is still up at (a)sp.”A”ce Gallery, here in Silver City. Thanks to Jean Be”ffort, gallerist and artist for his support in my Extreme Fiber Installation

Better than nothing….maybe

So it is now 2010, and I am finally chicking in. From Oklahoma City, visiting my parents. Since I just about ruined my right rotar cuff back in Silver City last week, this is an opportunity to continue the computer damage, but on a smaller scale.

Next week, when I return to the studio, I will be in high gear on two murals for a San Diego senior apartment complex. These will be in a quasi Arts and Crafts movement style, but fun enough. Pictures to follow.

This year is a year for change – after the quasi murals, of course. I have applied for my social security, such as it is, and this has prompted intermittent periods of self reflection. The basic W’s (who, what, when, Why, and where). Que Pasa and Bon Appettit.

Time Flies, Or not, Depending on the Fun at Hand

This summer came and went, mostly doing not so fun things. HOWEVER, now I am working in the studio again. Another deer, and Hurrah! a commission for a large birdbath. Dear deer

The birdbath is coming along, but slowly. It took about a month to get all of the ceramic pieces made, glazed and fired. birdbath bath base

As you can tell, I don’t often attend to this. I probably won’t get any better in the near future.

This is finally finished, after a lot of work. Getting the “antlers” attached and solid turned out to be multi-day event. I like this piece and reluctantly sent it to the gallery. Using the quaint and kitschy found objects is more like the old me.

Day of the Dead has been on my mind since last September. Several people in my life died, and even more to the point, it leaves the living with things to think about. And since I am firmly planted in my sixties now, I am rethinking who, what, why, where and what. Having lived near the US/Mexico border most of my adult life, I am grateful for the color and mixture of cultures. The skulls are inspired by the sugar skulls that are made and given, during the celebrations of Day of the Dead, Novembver 1st and 2nd. Mine are about archetypes, instead of specific individuals.
